Ambrose Math Olympiads

Ambrose is going for gold!

What is Math Olympiads? Math Olympiads is a year long (October - April) math competition program in the United States and worldwide, open to 4th and 5th graders with a love of math and are looking for more of a challenge.

The goal of Math Olympiads is to teach multiple strategies for out-of-the-box problem solving, develop mathematical flexibility in solving those problems, and grow mathematical creativity and ingenuity. You can find more information at https://moems.org/. Please note a questionnaire will be shared in September - all participants must complete this before the start of the program.‍ ‍

What will we work on? We will be working on solving complex problems both in practice and in individual competitions. Throughout the year, students will participate in 5 official Math Olympiads competitions. Each competition consists of 5 challenging problems to be completed in 30 minutes during our regularly scheduled club meetings at Ambrose. On the days that the students aren’t competing, students will practice solving Olympiad-style problems, learn a variety of problem-solving strategies, and review solutions from previous competitions. Teachers will score each student's work and submit the results to the Math Olympiads program, where students' scores are recorded along with participants from schools across the country.

Who are the coaches

Jen Miskelly and Kyra Johnson are excited to partner together to create a positive, engaging, and supportive learning environment for all 4th and 5th graders. All meetings will take place in Mrs. Miskelly’s classroom, room 242.

Does attendance matter?

Yes! Regular attendance is an important part of participating in Math Olympiads. Since each of the five contests are an official competition, there are no make-up contests for students who are absent. Each student's performance contributes not only to their individual score but also to Ambrose School's overall team score. We kindly ask that families make every effort to have their child attend all scheduled Math Olympiad meetings, especially on contest days. Consistent attendance also ensures that students benefit from practice sessions, strategy discussions, and reviewing solutions from previous competitions, all ofwhich help prepare them for future contests.
